MAC Studio Water Weight Foundation and 196 Foundation Brush | Review

mac water weight foundation
Another day, another new MAC product launch. This new MAC foundation launched a few weeks ago and of course, I wanted to get it straight away along with the unique foundation brush. I'm always intrigued by new foundations and I'm a fan of both Studio Fix Fluid/Powder and Matchmaster so I thought I'd try this because the description sounded intriguing.
MAC website describes it as M∙A∙C Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation – an innovative foundation that delivers colour in an ultra-fluid, elegantly thin, elastic gel serum formula. With stay-true colour and sheer medium buildable coverage, it softly blurs imperfections such as pores and fine lines. The addition of Moisture-Fusion Complex provides immediate and all-day hydration, leaving skin feeling quenched and soft, supple, silky to the touch.” It's definitely not a heavy fluid foundation but it is certainly thicker than the Face and Body foundation, and quite similar. I've read that this foundation is especially good for normal, dry and combination skin with the addition of moisture-fusion. On drier skins, I'd imagine it leaves the skin looking hydrated and luminous, and for both normal and combination skin types, it would look quite dewy and healthy-looking.
On my combination skin, it looks quite natural and luminous without looking over-oily. The first time I used the brush, I was actually a little disappointed because it left the foundation looking a bit streaky on my skin. Maybe I didn't buff it into my skin as well, but I also think it's because I am not the biggest fan of synthetic bristles for foundation applying. The bristles are very tightly packed together, making it very dense so I found it quite difficult to work with. I much prefer applying any liquid foundation with a damp sponge (Beauty Blender or KIKO sponge), and with this foundation, it's very buildable and was able to work more foundation in areas that needed more coverage without making it look too cakey. I would describe the look of this foundation to be almost like second skin that leaves a nice smooth base for powders - it's definitely not too thick and buildable to your preference.
When I first swatched my regular shade (NC25), I thought it almost leaned a little warmer than usual - almost NW25 on these photos. When I first tried the foundation properly, it actually looked like the usual NC25 colour after I gave the bottle a good shake (which it recommends) and was a pretty spot-on match. I love the dispenser of this foundation - it's a dropper applicator so you can control how much product comes out and keeps the lid/edge of the bottle quite clean. I'm thinking of mixing this foundation with some of my slightly heavier, thicker foundations like Studio Fix Fluid and Estee Lauder Double Wear to thin these foundations down, and add luminosity.
